After obtaining the Frozen ATPL, what is the next step?

NEWS

We understand that the time has come to look for job options where you can start an exciting and thrilling career as a commercial or airline transport pilot has just begun.

COMMERCIAL PILOT VS. AIRLINE PILOT

First we want to emphasise what a commercial pilot is, where we should not take it for granted that a commercial pilot is an airline pilot. We fully agree that an airline transport pilot is a type of commercial pilot, but on the contrary, a commercial pilot is not always an airline pilot.

There are many types of commercial pilots:

  • Air cargo pilots
  • Tourist pilots
  • Flight instructors
  • Fumigation pilots
  • Banner or glider towing pilots
  • Airline transport pilots

At this point, remember to always maintain the adequate preparation to be able to face with guarantees of success any entrance test to your first job as a COMMERCIAL PILOT.

After obtaining the Frozen ATPL, what is the next step? 1

ATTENTIVE TO JOB OPPORTUNITIES

If your passion has always been flying passenger aircraft, even transoceanic flights, flying wide-body aircraft, you are willing to travel all over the world, be flexible and keep all your options open, accepting any challenge that may arise. So now is the time to add flight hours with different experiences that will make your professional career a pathway to becoming a great pilot.

Whether by choice or as a result of a specific casuistry, choosing your next professional step is one of the most important decisions a professional pilot can make, but without a doubt, any experience that allows you to fly will contribute in some way to your training as a professional.

At World Aviation we have commercial agreements with recruitment agencies that will help you in the process of finding job opportunities in the industry.

SELECTION PROCESS

Once we have been invited to a selection process, we must take into consideration certain recommendations and important points that we must work on.

Point 1

CORRECT PREPARATION

  • There are numerous platforms that will help us in the preparation to successfully pass the initial airline entrance tests, where we can train different psycho-technical tests of primary evaluation, such as Cut-E, COMPASS, PILAPT or Mollymawk.

  • Technical interviews and specific tests with specific interview questions and answers that we must prepare for.

  • Keeping up to date with the theoretical aspects of the ATPL with different platforms where you can review the contents of the most relevant subjects.

  • Training and preparing different logic and reasoning tests:

    • Logical and Abstract Reasoning

    • Logical Inductive Reasoning

    • Logical Inductive Thinking

    • Logical Deductive Reasoning

    • Diagrammatic Reasoning and Raven’s Test

    • Mechanical Reasoning

    • Numerical Reasoning

    • Verbal Reasoning

    • Folding Cube

    • Number series

    • Analogies

  • Review generic concepts of mathematics, physics and aeronautical English.

Point 2

LOOK FOR INFORMATION ABOUT THE COMPANY

We must know where we stand.  There is nothing worse than a pilot applying for a job with an airline he barely knows. Even if he successfully passes all the tests, no airline would take a pilot without knowledge of the company. This is why it is important to seek information about the company during the preparation for the selection tests.

  • History of the airline: when the company was born and what are its major achievements.
  • Airline culture: each company has its own code. As a pilot, your role is to work according to it.
  • The airline’s fleet. It is good to gather information on the type and number of aircraft the airline has in its fleet.

Get to know the CEO and the management team you will be reporting to. At least the names of the Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Pilot.

Knowledge of the company is accessible from the airline’s website. Also talk to people or friends who are already with the airline. If you don’t know anyone within the company, you can use the forums, which are always really useful.

Point 3

THINK ABOUT PREVIOUS SITUATIONS IN YOUR CAREER OR TRAINING AS A PILOT

Human resources interviews often include questions about your past experiences. Interviewers will be able to see how you react in different situations. So expect to have questions about how you showed leadership values, good communication, teamwork in certain situations as a pilot.

These behavioural questions need preparation on how to answer them. Use the STAR Method and practice the best way to answer them. Quick tips, always make your interviewer listen to your answer and give you feedback.

Point 4

GOOD PRESENCE

You have probably heard many times that “first impressions matter“.

We especially need to keep this in mind in pilot selection processes where your competition is from the same source. As a pilot, you represent your airline and you are the image and authority in front of your passengers.

Therefore, you should wear a suit and tie in the selection process; there are many more looks in a selection process than you think.

We hope that with all these tips you will be prepared to successfully face the selection tests of your next professional stage.
