Today, we tackle a crucial topic for every pilot: the renewal of airplane pilot qualifications. In the world of aviation, keeping qualifications up to date is not only essential for the legality of operations but also to ensure safety in the skies. Type ratings are a fundamental pillar in any pilot’s career, certifying their capability to operate specific aircraft under various conditions. In this post, we will delve into the renewal process for these qualifications in detail, differentiate between revalidation and renewal, and provide a clear guide on the timelines and requirements necessary to keep these credentials current.
After completing a specific training and going through a series of assessments and examinations, pilots get what is called aircraft type rating. Such rating allow them to fly an aeroplane with particular features and systems and include a number of certifications and competences such as type rating, instrument rating and night flight rating, among others. This renewal is a necessary process for these professionals to keep their license active so they may continue operating safe and legal.
First of all, we must distinguish between revalidation and renewal:
The validity of a licence is determined by the validity of the ratings endorsed on the licence and the medical certificate.
The period of validity of class and type ratings shall be 1 year for multi-engine ratings (MEP) and 2 years for single-engine class ratings (SEP) unless otherwise determined by the authority. If pilots choose to meet the revalidation requirements earlier than prescribed, the new validity period will commence from the date of the proficiency check.
The process for renewal and its cost will largely depend on how long the relevant rating has been out of date.
Once the type rating has been obtained, pilots must comply with the recurring flight requirements to keep it in effect.
The specific demands for renewing aircraft pilot ratings may vary according to the country and the relevant aviation authority. However, there are common requirements which may include the following:
Airplane type ratings are established for:
The pilot licence, or flight licence, is the document that certifies a pilot has the ability to fly an aircraft of the model and within the framework of the certifications that this license includes. Their renewal and revalidation are necessary processes to ensure that pilots keep their skills and knowledge up to date.
Each type rating is valid for 12 months from the date of issue. For single-engine airplanes (SEP), the validity of type ratings is two years from the date of issue or the date of expiry if it has been revalidated within the validity period.
The procedures for the renewal of expired ratings shall depend on the time elapsed since the expiry date. Thus:
Less than 3 months
A competency check shall be carried out with an examiner.
More than 3 months and less than 1 year
A specific refresher course must be conducted consisting of a minimum of two one-hour flight sessions and a competency check with the examiner.
More than 1 year and less than 3 years
When the rating has been expired between 1 and 3 years, the refresher course shall have a minimum of three 1-hour flight sessions and a proficiency check with an examiner.
More than three years
In this case, a qualification course must be completed, with a minimum of 7 hours of theoretical class and 5 flight sessions of at least 1 hour duration. The last step will be the proficiency check with the examiner.
More than 7 years
If the qualification has not been revalidated or renewed in the previous 7 years, the applicant must again pass the theoretical knowledge examination as well as the skill test.
In conclusion, the renewal of airplane pilot qualifications is an indispensable process that requires attention and diligence from aviation professionals. As we have discussed, understanding the distinction between revalidation and renewal, as well as knowing the specific requirements and timelines, is essential for a successful and safe career in the skies. At World Aviation, we are committed to supporting our pilots by providing relevant information and practical advice to navigate these procedures with confidence. Moreover, we offer renewal courses for both SEP (Single Engine Piston) and MEP (Multi Engine Piston) qualifications, designed to meet the ongoing training needs of our pilots. These programs are meticulously structured to ensure that participants not only meet regulatory requirements but also enhance their skills and knowledge, ensuring safe and efficient operations.
