Electric planes, closer than we think

NEWS

Electric transport is advancing steadily in all sectors of our society, and we are used to seeing this zero-emission technology on the streets in scooters, bicycles, motorbikes and even cars.

But how close is it to the aeronautical industry?

The industry is advancing faster than we can imagine and we are getting closer and closer to the arrival of the first fully electric aircraft in the world of commercial aviation.

Among the various developments in this segment, we highlight the Alice, a 100% electric aircraft developed by Eviation, designed to bring electric mobility to our daily short-range flight industry in order to make it more sustainable.

The initial purpose of this development is regular short-haul flights, thanks to its two electric propulsion units, it reaches a cruising speed of over 400km/h and has a range of up to 815km per full recharge. It measures 18.5m in length and can accommodate up to nine passengers plus two crew in its maximum configuration.

It is in the process of certification with the FAA, the US Federal Aviation Administration, and EASA, the European Aviation Safety Agency. Once the process is completed, the goal is for Alice to enter service in 2024.

Another curiosity is “Energia“, the new hybrid and electric aircraft division that the international aeronautics corporation Embraer has registered for the first aircraft arriving in 2030. Energia will be the umbrella under which aircraft of various capacities will be launched, as well as several well-differentiated engines, all under the motto of “zero emissions”.  Energia expects to start its trajectory with four aircraft models, ranging from 9 to 50 seats, and diversified in propulsion systems such as combined hydrogen-electric, hybrid-electric and pure electric.
