These models are designed for troop movements, large search and rescue operations or heavy loads. This is the case of the Sikorsky S-92, the CH-47 Chinook or the Airbus H225. However, this high load capacity is not their only force: they also offer a high degree of stability in adverse weather conditions and allow to operate in extended ranges. On the other hand, a highly qualified crew is required.
The technological configuration of helicopters is another major variable to distinguish the different models and, although this factor is usually related to size, sometimes the number of engines may be independent of load capacity, especially in aircrafts oriented to emergency services.
These helicopters have a single engine that feeds the main rotor. A simple configuration typically used in light models for pilot training, recreational flying or simple observation work. Their advantages include low operating costs as they have a low fuel consumption and minimal maintenance cost. Among their disadvantages we find that they are more vulnerable to emergency situations because they do not have another engine in case of failure of the main one.
These have the advantage of remaining functional in case of failure of one of the engines as well as having greater autonomy. In that sense, it is a key configuration for helicopters involved in rescue operations, military operations, operations under adverse conditions or VIP transport. The higher operating costs and the need for experienced pilots to handle them safely are points to consider.
The acquisition of a helicopter requires a big thought and research. In the end, depending on the role and tasks to be performed as a pilot, the more suitable characteristics must be thoroughly studied. Therefore, according to the possible use, let’s see the best options:
The best recommendation for private pilots is lighter helicopters, with single-engine configuration as they have much more affordable prices, and lower operation and maintenance costs. The Robinson R44 and the Robinson R66 Turbine are two examples. The Airbus H125 (AS350 Écureuil), the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X or the Leonardo AW109 GranNew are models with a higher cost, but they are also faster and with a higher load capacity, ideal for more experienced pilots.
Usually, commercial flights require heavier, multi-engine machines to increase safety. Models such as the Airbus H145, the Bell 142, the Leonardo AW139 or the Sikorsky S-92 meet all these characteristics and are the most suitable for this type of navigation. The first two are lighter and perfect for uncomplicated commercial jobs, while the last two are larger and heavier and more suitable for more demanding missions.
Rescue or emergency pilots need highly reliable helicopters able to operate in critical situations: from very harsh climates or high mountains to very remote environments. Thus, models such as the Airbus H145, the Bell 429 or the Airbus H175 have proved, in countless occasions, to offer an excellent performance in these very delicate contexts. Its long range, multi-engine condition and robustness are its main advantages.
Military helicopters are generally combat aircrafts with a strong machinery and easy maneuverability as well as a high versatility to cope with the different tasks that may be required: troop transfer, reconnaissance missions, medical evacuation, combat rescue or air attack. Among the most outstanding models are the Boeing AH 64 Apache, the Eurocopter Tiger (EC665), the Mil Mi-24 (Hind) or the Kamov Ka-52.
The operating and maintenance costs of a helicopter depend on factors as varied as flight hours; cargo weight; crew remuneration; insurance; hangar; spare parts price or mechanical repairs. Light helicopters generally cost between $40,000 and $100,000 per annum, medium-sized helicopters between $200,000 and $400,000, heavy helicopters between $1 million and $2 million, and military helicopters between $2 million and $3 million.
It is difficult to name just one model as many subjective factors must be considered. There is, however, some consensus that the Robinson R22 makes things easy for novice pilots. Its lightness, intuitive control system, stability and low operating costs make it the first choice for most student pilots. The Robinson R44, Schweizer 300C or Guimbal Cabri G2 are also highly recommended for beginners.
Again, the Robinson R22 is the first choice for training future pilots. It is so for the same reasons that it is highly recommended as a first helicopter: compact size and simplicity of use. Right after in the list we can find, the Robinson R44, the Schweizer 300C or the Guimbal Cabri G2 along with models such as the Bell 206 JetRanger, the Enstrom F28/F280 or the Eurocopter EC120 Colibri.
The cost of helicopter training varies significantly depending on the type of the helicopter used, whether light or medium, as well as the geographical location and flight school. On average, full training in light helicopters is around $20,000, while training in medium helicopters can be between $35,000 and $65,000.
Due to the wide range of functions, they are able to assume, or simply because their main function is highly demanded in the market, several helicopters are particularly profitable in terms of job opportunities and investment return. These are: Bell 206 JetRanger, Airbus H125 (AS350), Sikorsky S-76, Robinson R44 and AgustaWestland AW139.
The aircraft market offers a wide variety of helicopter models depending on their size, use, number of engines, range, speed, load capacity and price. Although it is a quick-paying investment given the high demand for helicopter services, the acquisition of one of these machines requires careful study of all factors to find the most suitable for each pilot.
