The event, organized by SEPLA, paid tribute to the pioneer women who lead the way on aviation.

On  Sunday March 12th “Aviadoras”, a Sepla’s initiative, celebrated the “Women in Aviation Day” with an act that took place  in  World Aviation facilities at Cuatro Vientos Airport (Madrid). The occasion commemorated all the forerunners female pilots who paved the way for the ones today. During the morning, four women aviators shared their experiences as commercial pilots.

The occurrence was attended by the director of the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (AESA)Montserrat Mestres;  Verónica Elvira,  deputy director of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC); Mar Alguacil, director of “Aviadoras”  and A330 pilot,  and Sepla’s  president , Óscar Sanguino.

“This event serves,  Mar Alguacil points out, “to vindicate the inspiring path of the pioneering women pilots and their legacy in the history of aviation”. For this Airbus 330 commander, “it is essential to give visibility to the first women pilots, as well as to all those who have taken up their baton, demonstrating that dreams may come true”. Besides, “this act pretends  to inspire new generations so as to approach  female talent to this exciting profession”.

During the event, the publicist Darío Pozo remembered the international aviation pioneers, Amelia Earhart and Bessie Coleman, as well as the national ones, Pepa Colomer and María Bernaldo de Quirós. For Pozo, these pilots were an example of perseverance in pursuing their dreams: “neither storms nor prejudices could defeat them, they risked everything and touched the sky”.

Afterwards, a chat was held during which four pilots shared their professional experiences at the controls of an airplane. It was hounoured by the presence of Bettina Kadner, the first woman to fly a passenger airplane in Spain and Europe, as well as the first female commander in Spain.

Óscar Sanguino, SEPLA’s president , pointed out that “with this event today, we have reunited the past, present and future of women in aviation”, and thanked Aviadoras “for their commitment to this profession that will be great inspiration for girls who dream of being part of the most wonderful profession that exists: to be a pilot”.
